Sodalite is an opaque, navy blue semi-precious gemstone, usually with
characteristic white streaks. It is often used to substitute for its more
expensive cousin,
Lapis Lazuli.
Mystical Properties: Sodalite is considered
a gemstone of Trust and Rational Thought without the emotions that can
sometimes cloud judgement.
Thought to bring calm to its wearer and is said to have a strong feminine
(yin) polarity.
It is said to vibrate with the Third Eye Chakra,
which facilitates intuition, psychic
awareness, ESP and insight.
Natural Healers use Sodalite to increase the ability to trust one's self
and trust others, for nervous disorders, and stomach disorders related
to stress.
Sodalite is thought to help one make
logical decisions.
Sodalite is thought to be a gemstone of
Aquarius, the Astrological sign associated with fellowship and unemotional
humanitarianism.
Healing Properties: Stress. Attention deficit
disorder (ADD).
Scientific Properties: Composed of a Sodium
Aluminum Chlorine Silicate. The white streaks are Calcite runners.
Sodalite is formed in alkaline igneous and plutonic rocks with low silica
content.
Sodalite is very similar in appearance to
Lapis Lazuli, however Sodalite is lacking in the golden pyrite flecks
characteristic of
Lapis. Sodalite tends to have a brushed denim appearance whereas Lapis
tends to polish to a stronger sheen.
Found in Canada, Brazil and South Africa. 5.5- 6.5 on the
Moh's Hardness Scale
Buyer Beware!Sodalite is often used as a substitute for
Lapis Lazuli. Lapis will always have golden flecks in it--Sodalite
is characterized by white runners or streaks.
While Sodalite is a durable gemstone, the Calcite runners are not. Use
caution in cleaning this mineral, as the Calcite runners may be easily
dissolved by some solvents.
