Ruby Healing Properties
One of the most precious of all gemstones, the best Rubies are a transparent, deep, rich red. Rubies are the red variety of corundum (the blue variety being Sapphire). An exceptionally hard stone--the only gemstone harder is Diamond. The name corundum comes from the ancient Sanskrit kuruvindam.
Mystical Properties: To Hindus, the Ruby is the King of Precious Stones. To them it affords all protection--from enemies, guards their home and belongings. Their legends say rubies sprang up from the blood of the Demon God Vala. To give a ruby offering to the God Krishna is to come back a powerful ruler in the next life. The Ruby is associated with the highest caste, the Brahmins. To the Hindus, this is a gemstone of the Sun (Surya) and Hindu Astrology assigns it to the sign Leo.
The red gem is oftimes associated with the fiery, masculine planet Mars, however, in Western Astrology, Ruby is most commonly associated with the Sun (Leo) as the red of Ruby is associated with Fire (Leo is a fire sign).
The Burmese believed a soldier wearing a ruby inside his skin is invincible in battle, however, if the gem loses its luminosity, it is said to signal impending disaster.
Ruby is an important gemstone in opening a closed Sacral Chakra (2nd Chakra). Rubies are most often associated with the Heart Chakra. Thought to heal the heart both physically and emotionally and increase love, both given and received. Associated with Mars, it is considered a stone of masculine virility and fertility and thought to improve strength, courage and physical ability.
Natural Healers use ruby for headaches and to protect from psychic attack. Rubies are thought to induce strong dreams that provide guidance and teaching in one's life.
The Chinese Mandarins of the highest rank, were assigned red gems.
Hebrews believed a dragon carved onto a ruby brings prosperity, health and joy to its owner.
It is said the temple of the Holy Grail has a great Ruby atop that shines like a beacon at night.
Jewelers assign Ruby to the Month of July.
Said to favor women named Rose and men named Roland.
Hebrews assign the gemstone to Tuesday (ruled by Mars) and is said to favor Tuesday born children, however a Star Ruby is said to favor children born on Wednesday.

Rubies are the national gemstone of Burma (where the highest grade Rubies are found), and Siam.
Healing Properties: Besides being an excellent protector, rubbing a Ruby on your skin is said to maintain its youthful appearance. Thought helpful for Alzheimer sufferers and heart ailments.
Scientific Properties: Composed of Aluminum Oxide with traces of chromium for color. Strongly fluorescent in ultraviolet light (usually glows red or orange) plus its hardness are very good identifiers of the stone.
Famous Ruby locales include the famous gem gravels of Sri Lanka, Burma limestones, and Tanzania where rubies occur in mica dikes and green zoisite.
Hardness: 9.0 on the Moh's Hardness Scale.
